Datastrip and Codebench Simplify TWIC Deployment for U.S. Port

EXTON, Pa. (July 21, 2008) — The move to the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program presents U.S. port authorities with one of the greatest security challenges today. By implementing PIVCheck Plus from Codebench Inc. and Datastrip Inc., a major Southeastern U.S. port has deployed TWIC prior to the Department of Homeland Security’s April 2009 deadline.

When integrated with Datastrip’s DSV2+TURBO®, PIVCheck Plus presented a hardware and software solution to the Southeastern port when security officials sought to implement TWIC using its existing physical access control system (PACS).

Using PIVCheck Plus to tie a TWIC credential to a PACS badge, port employees and transportation workers can continue using their PACS badges for port access, while their TWIC certificates are checked for revocation. If PIVCheck’s Certificate Manager finds a revoked certificate, the cardholder’s PACS badge will be automatically suspended. This important feature leverages the port’s legacy PACS infrastructure and supports it with certificate management.

PIVCheck Plus does not require a connection to, or the cost of, an identity management system to be able to import card data into a PACS. Because PIV and TWIC cards contain all of the data needed for enrollment, once those cards are validated and authenticated, importing the information is as simple as clicking “OK.”

“PIVCheck Plus will change the paradigm that TWIC compliance has to be complicated and costly,” said Geri Castaldo, chief executive officer of Codebench. “It gives facility operators the flexibility to migrate to TWIC-enabled readers over time, or to not migrate at all.”
